About the course
Aim
The course is structured in two parts. After completing the first part the students should be able to:•describe the main concepts and working methods of scientific work;•have knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods;•criticize scientific works;•search for and critically evaluate information sources;•and evaluate the context in which their own project will be developed. The course specific objectives are:•to develop a broader knowledge concerning the current automation technology;•to develop the ability of making use of that technology in the planning, design and implementation of automation solutions;•to develop programming skills concerning the use of automation languages (not limited to but including IEC 61131 and IEC 61499);•and understand the emerging technological trends concerning automation technology.
Content
The content of the course is to engage the students in the development of industrial automation projects. In this context, the students will be exposed to the cross technological work that is fundamental in the automation of industrial systems of different scales. After finishing the course the students should have acquired enough experience to actively contribute to the projection, design and implementation of automated manufacturing/production systems using a sound scientific methodology.Automation has been traditionally a practitioner-oriented domain. In this context, some of the technical solutions have resulted from expert knowledge rather from a sound methodological approach. The students are therefore expected to apply the proper scientific methodology when developing their projects.
