About the course
Aim
The course provides fundamental knowledge in biochemistry and biochemical/molecular biology laboratory techniques. After the course the student should:
- Be able to account for the structure of proteins and apply this knowledge to understand the relationship between structure and function.
- Be able to describe how enzymes function as biological catalysts and interpret the meaning of kinetic parameters in terms of enzyme function.
- Know the structure and function of the most common biomolecules and describe the basic metabolism of carbohydrates.
- Be able to explain the structure and function of nucleic acids and the central dogma of molecular biology.
- Be able to explain and use basic separation and analysis methods in biochemistry as well as biochemical/genetic laboratory techniques.
- Be able to reproduce the structure of the 20 amino acids commonly found in proteins and some of their properties.
- Be able to analyze laboratory data and write laboratory reports as well as account for the possible toxicity of chemicals and their waste management.
