    About the course

    Aim

The course introduces the students to modern work procedures used by engineers. Specifically, the course introduces basic methods for managing, and working in, projects. Through the project work the student shall gain insight into one application area where mathematical modelling is used to solve a relevant technical problem. After having finished the course the student should be able to:

    • plan a project starting from given requirement specification, document the plan in the form of a project plan and work schedule, and finally complete a project while following a formal project model.
    • actively contribute to a good spirit of cooperation within a project group, and explain how formal rules for the cooperation can help a group function properly.
    • present the project, including the mathematical methods used, both orally and in writing.
    • find the relevant information needed to solve the problem.
    • explain how mathematics have contributed to the historical development of both the natural sciences and technology, and also the importance of mathematics for technical problem solving.
    • give examples of how working according to a formal project model contributes to an efficient use of resources, guarantees the quality of the developed products, and helps a company improve.
    • discuss how mathematical modelling, and the technical content in the projects, can contribute to a sustainable development.

    Content

Lectures: The project model LIPS. To plan a project and document both the work and the results. Finding relevant information and managing references. Written communication with a special focus on mathematical formulas in text. Working in groups and group dynamics. Introduction to programming with focus on computations and visualization. Introduction to the history of mathematics, its importance for science and technology, and how simulation can be used to increase efficiency and reduce resource consumption. How new technology, and mathematical methods, can contribute to sustainable development. Examples of the use of mathematics for solving technical and scientific problems.
