About the course

Aim

The course aims to provide basic theoretical, laboratory and instrumental knowledge in analytical chemical separation technology.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain basic terms and concepts in analytical separation technology (chromatography and capillary electrophoresis) and mass spectrometry.
  • describe the principle and structure of instruments used in chromatography, capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry.
  • explain the chemical principle of analytical separation methods.
  • use analytical instruments (chromatography, mass spectrometry and capillary electrophoresis) to generate and evaluate data quantitatively and qualitatively, and to summarize the results in a laboratory report.

Content

Theory of chromatographic separation. Gas chromatography (GC) including sample injection, separation and detection. High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods such as normal phase and reversed phase HPLC, ion chromatography and size-exclusion chromatography. Theory and principles of capillary electrophoresis. Mass spectrometry. Chromatography combined with mass spectrometry: GC-MS and HPLC-MS. The course also addresses sustainable development; students learn to (i) use important methods for environmental analysis, (ii) handle hazardous chemicals, and (iii) collect and manage chemical waste in a correct and sustainable manner
