    About the course

    Aim

To be able to reason about, understand and thereby apply kinetic, quantum mechanical and spectroscopic concepts and relationships, be able to treat kinetic, quantum mechanical and spectroscopic questions and solve related problems, and evaluate the reasonableness of obtained kinetic, quantum mechanical and spectroscopic results.

Examined through the exam (TEN1) and laboratory reports (LAB1).

To be able to perform kinetic and spectroscopic experiments and to be able to analyze the results obtained.

Examined through compulsory attendance and laboratory reports (LAB1).

    Content

Kinetics: rate equations and their integration, reaction order, half life, mechanisms, catalysis, photochemistry, techniques for measuring fast reactions, flow, flash and relaxation methods, activation energies and molecular reaction dynamics. Quantum mechanics: basic quantum-mechanical concepts, particle-in-a-box, harmonic and anharmonic oscillator, rotation on a ring and on a sphere, the hydrogen atom, plus elementary introduction to many-electron atomic and molecular electron structure. Spectroscopy: interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter by absorption and emission, fluorescence and phosphorescence, lasers, rotational, vibrational and electron spectroscopic methods such as microwave, infrared, visible/UV, X-ray photoelectron and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
