About the course

Aim

The course aims to provide basic theoretical and laboratory knowledge in titration analysis.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the chemical principle of titration analyses.
  • write reaction formulas and carry out quantitative calculations in connection with titration analyses.
  • calculate and analyze titration curves.
  • explain how the equivalence point can be indicated in titration analysis.
  • construct logarithmic pH diagrams and use these to describe equilibria in acid base titrations.
  • plan, carry out and evaluate titration analyses and compile the results in a laboratory report.

Content

General aspects of analytical chemistry. Acid-base equilibria and pH graphs (logarithmic diagrams). Quantitative chemical analysis based on volumetric methods: acid-base, redox, complexometric and precipitation titrations – theory and applied laborations where authentic samples are analysed. Titrations with indicators and potentiometric titrations. Experimental errors. The course also addresses sustainable development; students learn to (i) use important methods for environmental analysis, (ii) handle hazardous chemicals, and (iii) collect and manage chemical waste in a correct and sustainable manner.
