About the course
Aim
The course aims to provide theoretical knowledge of basic genetics and molecular genetic mechanisms. Furthermore, the course will highlight theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular genetic methods and their use, particularly in the biomedical field.
Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Explain how genetic information is structured, inherited, expressed and regulated by eukaryotes
- Describe what epigenetics is and its role in gene regulation
- Describe the mechanisms that contribute to genetic variation in humans and explain the relationship between genetic variation and complex disease
- Explain the theoretical background to modern molecular genetic methods
- Describe the basic ethical problems arising from the medical application of genetics
Skills and abilities
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Use certain molecular genetic techniques
- Analyze the results of modern molecular genetic techniques using bioinformatic and statistical tools
- Identify adequate analytical methods to apply to relevant biomedical issues
- Critically assess scientific articles from a scientific perspective in genetics
Judgement ability and approach
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical approach to finding relevant information within the field of medical molecular genetics
- Evaluate the advantages, disadvantages and ethical problems that arise in connection with the use of genetic information in healthcare
Content
The course will study basic molecular genetics with a focus on medical genetics. Molecular knowledge is applied to issues linked to understanding the role of genetics in certain diseases, its use in modern healthcare and ethical perspectives in diagnostics and care. Also included are molecular genetic techniques and models that can be used within biotechnical and biomedical research and medical applications.
More specifically the course includes:
- Structure and function of the human genome
- Transcriptional regulation and epigenetics
- Mutations and polymorphisms
- Molecular genetic techniques
- Model organisms in molecular genetics
- Clinical genetics
