    About the course

    Aim

After completing the course the student should be able to

    • understand causes and principles of power consumption and energy consumption
    • apply techniques to achieve low power consumption on different abstraction levels from systems and algorithms down to circuits
    • design systems with low energy dissipation
    • estimate and optimise power and energy consumption.

    Content

The course deals with important aspects in design of energy-efficient electronic systems such as

    • power dissipation in CMOS circuits
    • switch activity and switched capacitance
    • methods and tools for power estimation
    • power estimation on different abstraction levels
    • relation between delay and power consumption
    • scaling of supply voltage and threshold voltage
    • design of CMOS circuits for low supply voltage
    • influence of data dependency on power dissipation
    • minimising switching and glitches
    • algorithm transformations for low power consumption
    • clocking or asynchronous techniques
    • energy recovery.
