About the course
Aim
After completed course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Explain the basic principles of practical transmitters and receivers, their analog and digital errors, and digital correction and synchronization techniques required.
- Analyze and simulate in software the effects of channel errors, synchronization errors, nonlinearities, and analog and digital noise sources and propagation.
- Design and implement in software digital signal processing algorithms for error correction and synchronization.
- Explain the basic principles of waveforms, OFDM and LTE systems, crest factor, peak-to-average power ratio, channelization, and carrier aggregation.
Content
- Transmitters and receivers: Analog/digital interfaces: Analog and digital filters, digital-to-analog converters (DACs), analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), interpolation and decimation, dynamic range, automatic gain control (AGC), modulators and demodulators, low-IF modulators, zero-IF modulators, architectures, pulse shaping, matched filters, transmultiplexers.
- Error sources: Channel errors, synchronization errors, carrier frequency, phase, sampling instance, and I/Q mismatch errors, analog and digital noise sources, and noise propagation, white noise, 1/f noise, phase noise, nonlinearities, weakly nonlinear systems, harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion.
- Error correction and synchronization: Channel equalization, frequency response equalization, channel shortening, synchronization of carrier frequency, phase, sampling instance, and I/Q mismatch errors, predistortion, post linearization.
- Waveforms: single- and multi-carrier systems, OFDM and LTE systems, crest factor, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), channelization, carrier aggregation.
