About the course
Aim
Road traffic accidents are a worldwide public health and economic problem. The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge about traffic safety theories, causes, problems and countermeasures.
After completion of the course the student will be able to
- Understand the size, quality and trend of the road safety problem in different societies.
- Identify the main accident factors, exposure and accident risks.
- Determine which factors influence the number and severity of accidents.
- Identify road accident “black spots” locations in a city using STRADA database.
- Understand and apply statistical methods for analysing and predicting traffic accidents data e.g. regression models.
- Understand and apply guidelines for traffic calming measures in a city.
- Study and evaluate different applications of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that enhance road safety.
- Study and evaluate different applications of Autonomous Vehicles and safety.
- Set up a national traffic safety activity plan over 5-15 years period of time.
Content
The course is divided into three learning parts:
Part 1: Accidents data, data analysis, theories, causes and countermeasures.
Part 2: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Autonomous Vehicles and Safety.
Part 3: National road safety programme in a country with focus on ITS.
