    About the course

    Aim

The goal of the course is to provide an introduction to mathematical modeling of random experiments and statistical methods and concepts. It should also demonstrate applications relevant to the programs for which it is offered. After completing the course, the student should be able to:

    • Analyze and visualize the distribution of a dataset, both with and without computer support.
    • Calculate probabilities for events using concepts, theorems, and definitions covered in the course.
    • Conduct statistical analysis using concepts, theorems, and definitions covered in the course, both with and without computer support.

    Content

    • Probability: Set theory and combinatorics. Basic probability theorems. Discrete and continuous random variables with some distribution measures. Some common probability models. The Central Limit Theorem.
    • Statistics: Descriptive statistics with some distribution measures. Visualizations. Point and interval estimates. Hypothesis testing, including p-values. Correlation. Simple linear regression.
