About the course
Aim
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Explain the reasons why classical physics needed to be supplemented with modern physics.
- Manage physical concepts included in the course during problem-solving.
- Investigate physical concepts covered in the course using computer simulations as a support.
Content
The course consists of four areas within physics: relativity theory, quantum mechanics (including atomic physics), statistical mechanics, and solid-state physics (including semiconductor physics).
Relativity Theory: Overview of special relativity, relativistic dynamics.
Quantum Mechanics: Interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter, wave-particle duality, and uncertainty relations. Schrödinger equation and its solutions in some simple cases. Tunnel effect. Single- and multi-electron systems with the Pauli principle and the periodic table.
Statistical Mechanics: Distributions (Maxwell-Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac, and Bose-Einstein). Physical quantities derived from distribution functions.
Solid-State Physics: Types of materials. Crystal structures. Properties of solids, especially electrical conductivity in semiconductors, and band theory.
