About the course
Aim
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe and calculate hydrostatic pressures against horizontal and inclined gaps in water.
- Describe and calculate the stability of liquid bodies.
- Describe and apply the continuity condition for water flow and describe forces caused by flow. Explain and apply the energy equation for flow in pipes and calculate flow losses.
- Describe how pumps are used in a water supply system and calculate pump flows, boost heights and energy consumption for pumps.
- Dimension different types of VA pipes.
- Report and describe the construction of pipes.
- Describe different methods of investigating, analyzing and maintaining pipe networks.
- Report and describe systems for wastewater treatment.
Content
Knowledge of hydraulics and hydrology is fundamental for understanding and solving many tasks that a civil engineer can be faced with. Examples of such tasks are designing and building pipes and facilities for water supply. It is important to provide society with water of the right quality and quantity, as well as clean polluted water before it is released back to the recipient.
- Hydrostatics: Water pressure against flat surfaces. Stability of liquid bodies.
- Hydrodynamics: The energy equation in pipe flow. Friction losses, additional losses. Turbines and pumps. Systems of pipes and reservoirs.
- Supply and need for water. Purification of raw water. Construction and design of water and sewage piping systems. Operation and maintenance of management systems. Wastewater treatment.
