About the course

Aim

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the solid bedrock from a rock mechanics perspective.
  • describe and calculate the impact, structure and mechanical properties of Quaternary geological formations.
  • dimensioning simple geoconstructions.
  • describe prerequisites for planning various construction projects.

Content

The course goes through the basic parts connected to civil engineering such as geotechnical engineering (which also applies to all construction activities), rock engineering and geoconstructions with regard to concrete foundations. The course also includes an orientation in various major construction projects that serve as case studies. The course aims to provide a broad knowledge of the conditions of plant construction regarding foundation and reinforcement methods. The course also provides knowledge about construction in and on rocks as well as an insight into different types of construction.

  • Substrate properties; rock mechanics, rock technology, Quaternary geology, soils, subsoil classification and properties,
  • Dimensioning of foundation walls, retaining walls and girders.
  • Analysis of slope stability.
  • Presentation of soil reinforcement methods.
  • General information on dimensioning of reinforced concrete in geoconstructions according to Eurocodes.
  • Overview of different types of infrastructure projects
