About the course

TMMV63 Computational Aerodynamics is a course at Linköping University (6 credits, advanced level). Since 2022, 100% of 68 students have passed the regular sitting. 100% of 14 students passed the latest regular sitting (31 Aug 2026). Updated 20 Oct 2026

Aim

After the course, the student will be able to:

  • Create appropriate computational models of varying complexity based on the conditions of different aerodynamic flow cases.
  • Use advanced numerical tools to conduct aerodynamic simulations with the aim of studying performance parameters such as lift and drag, etc.
  • Analyze and evaluate computational results and critically reflect on the methodology used.
  • Identify important results and present them in a clear and scientific manner.

Content

  • Repetition of basic aerodynamic terminology.
  • Fundamental CFD (e.g. mesh, discretization, and numerical schemes) is discussed.
  • The course deals with both viscous and inviscid flow (Euler calculations).
  • Compressible effects, like shock waves, and how to handle these.
  • Flow around aircraft and related things will be in focus, other objects and vehicles are also possible.
