About the course
Aim
The purpose of the course is to give the students a solid basis in statics, and to give them the ability to independently apply these laws on concrete problems, with focus on statics of structures. After the course the student should be able to:
- draw free-body diagrams and formulate equilibrium equations
- calculate external reactions, and internal forces and moments, acting on simple structures in equilibrium
- identify obviously unrealistic results
Content
Force and moment of a force, couples, plane equilibrium of rigid bodies, statically determinate trusses, center of mass and center of gravity, statically determinate beams, distributed loadings including hydrostatic pressure on plane surfaces, area moment of inertia, bending moment- and shear force diagrams, statically determinate frames
