About the course
Aim
The course familiarises students with the laws and methods of classical mechanics and practice in applying these. After the course the student isexpected to:
- know and understand central concepts, models and methods of statics, particle dynamics and rigid body dynamics.
- have acquired a systematic approach to the solution of engineering problems based on the chain idealization - mathematical formulation -interpretation of results.
- be able to critically assess results of calculations, both with respect to the suitability of the model and its correct application.
Content
- First part. Statics: force systems in two and three dimensions, couple, moment vector, reduction of force systems, support conditions, free body diagrams, force equilibrium, moment equilibrium, Coulomb’s law of friction. Particle dynamics: Newton’s laws of motion, gravitation, velocity and acceleration in cartesian, polar and natural coordinates, work and energy, power, impulse and momentum, impact, linear oscillations, initial conditions.
- Second part. Rigid body dynamics in the plane: velocity and accleration for absolute and relative motion, instantaneous center of zero velocity, Euler’s equations of motion, work and energy, impulse and momentum, angular impulse and moment of momentum. Rigid body dynamics in three dimensions: time differentiation of a vector in rotating coordinates, moment of momentum, the inertia matrix, Euler’s equations of motion in 3D, work and energy, forces of imbalance, gyroscopic motion.
