About the course

Aim

The course is an introduction to materials science from a mechanical engineering perspective and is intended to give basic knowledge about different engineering materials and their structure, properties, production, and use. After completing the course, the student will be able to

  • Describe the inner structure of materials and their physical behavior when subjected to mechanical loading, temperatures, and different environments.
  • Relate the inner structure of a material to different manufacturing processes and the physical behaviour.
  • Perform, evaluate, document, analyse and draw conclusions from material testing to observe the inner structure and measure the physical properties of a material.

Content

Material classification, crystallography, chemical bonding, microstructures, phase diagrams, mechanical properties, chemical composition, solubility, diffusion, dry and wet corrosion.Deformation and strengthening mechanisms in metals and polymers, connection material structure and industrial manufacturing processes, casting, heat treatment, metalworking, polymerisation, curing, passivation, connection material properties and product performance.Material testing and metallography.
