About the course
Aim
The purpose of the course is to give the students a solid basis in solid mechanics, and to give them the ability to independently apply these laws on concrete problems, with focus on structures. After the course the student should be able to:
- Calculate normal stresses in trusses, and normal- and shear stresses in beams
- Calculate external reactions, and internal forces and moments, for statically indeterminate trusses, beams and frames
- Calculate shear stresses and angle of twist for shafts with circular cross sections
- Design simple structures with respect to stiffness, strength and stability
Content
Stress and strain, constitutive laws, compatibility, statically indeterminate trusses, normal- and shear stresses in beams, statically indeterminate beams, differential equation of the deflection curve, elemental cases, frames, elastic stability- Euler’s cases, torsion
