    About the course

    Aim

    • Explain the complexity of large technical systems and how they relate to sustainable development.
    • Describe different approaches and methods for analysing systems, explain how they relate to the purpose of the analysis, and exemplify how they can support decision-making in the context of sustainable development.
    • Explain and reflect on the relationship between the economy and the environment and on the different perspectives on sustainable societies.
    • Explain and apply different strategies for a company to contribute to a sustainable society.
    • Explain and discuss the significance of key parts of society's energy systems: supply, transformation, distribution and use of energy.

    Content

The course introduces the concept of sustainable development including the economic, environmental, and social challenges and opportunities facing the world today, with emphasis placed on material and energy related challenges. Starting from these, a variety of both simple mitigation methods and complex proactive strategies to reduce environmental impacts from societies' energy and material use are examined. These strategies are approached from both a management and an engineering perspective, and their outcomes in terms of economic, environmental and energy output are discussed. Tools for assisting-decision making, implementing changes, and measuring outcomes are also presented. This course also touches upon the conditions that enable or hinder these strategies such as policies, the economic system and societal values.

Large technical systems is a central topic with special emphasis placed on electricity and heat use and provision, transport, water and waste management systems, linkages between systems, system thinking and life cycle approaches to solving environmental problems. Other important topics are the role of corporate sustainability management, design and innovation and government policies in reducing environmental impacts e.g. eco-innovation, eco-labelling and sustainable business models.
