About the course
Aim
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Analyze the challenges of conventional engineering design approaches and how ecodesign and related approaches address them as well as its limitations.
- Explain and apply lifecycle assessment to design engineering challenges.
- Apply ecodesign and related approaches to meet an design engineering challenge toward improved environmental performance and value creation.
- Discuss policy, rules, regulations, and standards relevant to ecodesign and related approaches.
- Discuss the limitations of ecodesign and related approaches for the mitigation of systemic sustainability challenges.
- Critically assess the impact of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies on the roles, competencies, and perspectives of engineers in the context of ecodesign.
Content
The course provides knowledge and practice in lifecycle assessment. It provides insight into the history and impact of ecodesign on the manufacturing industry, its evolution and current state. A broad set of relevant policy, rules, regulations, and standards as well as their genesis are introduced and discussed. Ecodesign strategies and methods are introduced, investigated, and applied by students to provided and self-selected engineering design challenges. A project serves as a frame for a comprehensive application of both lifecycle assessment and ecodesign methods and tools to a given challenge, including a critical discussion of their potential and limitations. Guest lectures provide insight on ecodesign in practice.
