About the course
Aim
The purpose of the course is to provide skills in classical mechanics and familiarity with concepts for developing a physical mindset in engineering contexts.
Following the course, the student shall be able to:
- Use physical concepts to formulate models and perform estimations and assess reasonableness in problem-solving in physics.
- Develop physical models through exploratory experiments.
- Analyze and communicate conclusions from experimental measurements.
- Describe motion kinematically and solve problems in mechanics by using equations of motion and conservation laws.
- Apply the theory to determine equilibria and dynamics of particles, systems of particles and rigid bodies.
Content
- The major areas of physics and their relation to the parts of the program focused on physics. Units, dimensional analysis and the Buckingham pi theorem. Data analysis. Estimations and reasonableness assessments.
- Development and repeated revision of physical models through experimental problem-solving.
- Kinematics of particles, Cartesian and polar coordinates, kinematics of rigid bodies.
- Fundamental physical concepts: mass, force, momentum, impulse, work, power, kinetic energy, potential energy, conservative and non-conservative forces (including frictional forces), total momentum, center of mass, moment of inertia, torque, angular momentum.
- Newton's laws of motion, conservation laws for momentum, energy and angular momentum, Euler's laws of motion, Newton's theory of gravitation.
- Equilibria and dynamics of particles and systems of particles.
- 2D/3D-equilibria and 3D-dynamics of rigid bodies (including vector treatment of angular velocity and acceleration ), the “couple” concept, kinetic energy of rigid bodies that undergo fixed-axis rotation (including translation).
- Periodic motion (including damped and forced oscillations).
- Systematic problem-solving in mechanics (including free-body diagrams and constraint equations).
