About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is to give knowledge in materials in nanotechnology and to describe processes occurring at the nano-bio interface. The student should after this course be able to:
- Describe, for various materials, their composition and properties, and with the help of them motivate the choice of materials for different applications
- Describe how nanomaterials are produced and characterized and delineate how the materials are used in nanotechnology applications.
- Explain how and via which mechanisms nanomaterials may interact with biological systems, and describe potential risks associated with this interaction
- Reflect upon sustainability- and ethical aspects associated with the production and use of nanomaterials
- Independently take part of, critically review and present the content of a scientific article
Content
- Introduction to materials for nanotechnology applications
- Relevant types of materials (metals, polymeric- ceramic materials), build-up and structure (nano- micro-level)
- Electrical, physical and mechanical properties of materials
- Phase diagram and phase transformation (examples from steel, aluminium alloys, micro electronics,...)
- Nanomaterials as biomaterials and in bionanotechnology
- Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials
- Cell-nanomaterial interaction, involved mechanisms (e.g. cellular uptake and immune response reactions)
- Potential risks with nanomaterials and methods to evaluate nanotoxicity
- Sustainability and ethics in Nanotechnology
- Student presentations of selected scientific articles. Critical review and oral presentation of the article contents including individual reflections
