About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge elektromagnetic waves with a focus on optics.After successful examination the student should know basic concepts to be able to solve problems in the four areas;
- ray optics
- wave optics
- materials optics
- polarization optics
Furthermore, the student should be able to;
- relate theory to applications based on optical phenomena
- perform optical measurements in the four areas above
- present measurements, results and conclusions
Content
The course cover the four optical areas ray optics (geometrical optics), wave optics (physical optics), materials optics and polarization optics. In addition, a brief introduction to particle optics (photons, electrons, neutrons) is given at the end of the course. The course consists of four parts corresponding to the four areas, further divided into eight chapters according to,I. Ray optics: 1. Interfaces 2. Optical systemsII. Wave optics: 3. Transmission interference, 4. Reflection interferenceIII. Material optics: 5. Optical properties, 6. Dispersion modelsIV. Polarizing optics: 7. Polarized light, 8. Polarizing materials and components
Several optical applications are addressed during the course.
