About the course
Aim
The course shows how the variational principle is used to tackle problems in mechanics. It provides an overview of analytical mechanics, focusing on the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. After the course, students will be able to:
- formulate the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian for various mechanical systems;
- solve and analyze equations of motion in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations;
- use generating functions to carry out canonical transformations.
Content
Variational approach to mechanics, Hamilton's principle, Lagrange's equations, first integrals and conservation theorems, elimination of cyclic variables, small oscillations theory, central force problem, Hamiltonian formulation of mechanics, canonical transformations, Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Poisson bracket formulation, introduction to analytical mechanics of continuous systems.
