          About the course

          Aim

The course provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship structure - function - dynamics of biological molecules. After successfully completing the course, the student can:

          • Describe and explain concepts, methods and theories for determining the structure and dynamics of biomolecules• Suggest the choice of structural biology method for solving a given structural analytical problem• Interpret data from structural biology experiments and use molecular graphics to illustrate and explain structure-function relationships

          Content

The course introduces several techniques used to determine and / or analyze structures of biomolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids and their complexes.

NMR spectroscopy: theory and applications for biomolecules, procedure for structure determination and analysis of dynamics of proteins.

X-ray crystallography: protein crystallization, X-ray diffraction theory and structure determination procedure.

A general introduction is given to additional complementary structural analysis methods, such as SAXS + EM to better illuminate the strengths and weaknesses of the various techniques.

Molecular graphics and its use for structural analysis and illustration are also treated as a tool.
