About the course
Aim
The course provides knowledge of methods for measurements of electrical and physical quantities using both different types of common electrical measurement equipment as well as computer based measurement methods.
After the course the student should be able to:
- perform measurements in discrete networks using mulimeters and oscilloscopes.
- perform frequency analysis of signals using oscilloscopes.
- perform measurements with different sensors.
- Explain common sources for measurement errors, make estimations of error size and explain origins and suggest ways to reduce electrical disturbances.
- describe the working principles behind common sensors and measurement equipment, as well as be able to perform calculations to solve problems related to these.
Content
The course are divided into two parts with the following course content:
- First part: Practical applications of methods and problems in connection with measurements of current and voltages The principles of digital voltmeters and their properties. Measurements with digital oscilloscopes and a walkthroug of common function in these. Different trigging methods. Frequency analysis. Sorces of electrical interference and how to reduce different types of interference.
- Second part. The computer as a tool for acquisition of measurement data and signal conditioning. A data acquisition card for computer-based measurement of signals fromdifferent sensors, e.g. a light sensor is constructed, tested, and connected to a computer. Principles of different temperature sensors. Measurement and control of temperature is performed in a LabView environment. Data acquisition using data acquisition cards (DAQ-cards) and external instruments connceted to a computer.
