About the course
Aim
The course aims to provide basic knowledge about genetics and evolution. After the course the student will be able to:
- with correct terminology account for genetic courses presented during the course, and their consequences.
- mathematically analyse different types of genetic problems.
- argue on issues concerning the role of genetics in society
- through group discussions analyse the role of evolutionary processes.
Content
The course introduces genetic principles. Different types of cell division (mitosis and meiosis). The structure and function of chromosomes. Variation-generating processes such as mutation and recombination. Inheritance and genetic analysis including genetic mapping. Central molecular genetic processes. Cancer genetics. Gene technology. Evolutionary processes and the foundation of evolution. The role of evolution and its consequences for human and society.
