About the course
Aim
The aim of the course is that the students should gain an understanding of the basic concepts of logic as well as applications of logic in computer science. After the course the student will be able to:
- explain basic concepts in propositional and first-order logic, such as syntax and semantics;
- formulate statements and arguments in symbols using a formal logical framework and create formal definitions;
- show different relations between formulas and sets of formulas;
- understand and apply techniques and algorithms commonly used in logic
- write logically correct formal proofs and judge whether a proof attempt constitutes a correct proof
Content
Formal syntax and semantics of propositional and first-order logic. Concepts like consistency, consequence and equivalence, plus proofs and refutations of these properties. Reasoning using formal proof systems, such as resolution. Soundness and completeness.
