About the course

Aim

After completing the course, the student should

  • be able to choose and apply solution methods to problems within the central parts of the course, which are described in the course content.
  • be able to report and justify solutions to tasks within the course content using relevant concepts and clear reasoning.

Content

Part A: Group theory. Cyclic groups, classification of finite abelian groups. Quotient groups. Group action. The class equation with applications.

Part B: Ring theory. Ideals, homomorphisms, isomorphism theorems. Principal ideal domains, especially polynomial rings.

Part C: Field extensions; algebraic, transcendental, finite-dimensional. Splitting fields, fraction fields. Finite fields. Construction, existence, uniqueness. Frobenius homomorphism.
