    About the course

    Aim

The course deals with synthesis of organic compounds from a molecular-centered perspective with emphasis on principles that govern and prove the relationship between the structure and reactivity of molecules in different transformations. After completing the course the student should be able to:

    • explain the theory of molecular structure, kinetics, mechanisms and stereochemistry
    • conduct synthesis planning and synthesis of complex molecules
    • independently apply advanced chemical synthetic techniques
    • discuss and apply chemical synthesis from a green chemistry perspective
    • analyze and make risk assessments of chemical compounds

    Content

The course includes advanced theory of molecular structure, kinetics, mechanisms and stereochemistry with special significance for molecular synthesis. Synthesis strategies for the creation of carbon-carbon, carbon heteroatom and carbon-metal bonds are central. Green chemistry principles such as catalysts, atomic economy, choice of solvent and reduction of the amount of waste will be discussed. Synthesis planning of complex molecules forms the basis of the laboratory exercises which illustrate advanced chemical synthesis techniques and work methodology.
