    About the course

    Aim

The course covers analytical chemistry at an advanced level from a molecular perspective. The course aims at giving the students a thorough theoretical knowledge of chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS), and how these techniques can be applied and combined to separate and identify molecules.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

    • select a proper analytical method based upon the molecular structure and the analytical problem
    • explain the principle of various analytical techniques and how these enable separation and characterization of molecules
    • understand the theory behind chromatographic scaling/column dimensioning and how it can be applied to increase productivity and decrease consumption of chemicals
    • discuss fragmentation of molecules obtained in chromatography-mass spectrometry
    • discuss molecular analysis from the perspective of green and sustainable chemistry
    • independently apply chromatography and mass spectrometry.

    Content

Scaling within both gas and liquid chromatography is discussed. Scaling into smaller column dimensions increase productivity and decrease the consumption of chemicals, which is important from both industrial an environmental perspectives. Theoretical and instrumental aspects of modern mass spectrometers, fragmentation in liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and how high-resolution mass spectrometry can be applied to determine the molecular formula are covered.

The course includes a laboratory course in which analytical methods are applied for qualitative and quantitative analysis of various molecules.
