About the course

Aim

The course provides fundamental knowledge in biochemistry, including structure and function of biomolecules and metabolism in living cells. After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to describe the structure of proteins using the concepts; primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure, and apply this knowledge to understand the connection between structure and function and describe how enzymes function as biological catalysts.
  • know the structure and function of the most common biomolecules and describe the basic metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, including the bioenergetic conditions and regulatory mechanisms.
  • be able to account for the structure and function of nucleic acids and for the central dogma in molecular biology.
  • be able to reproduce the structure of the 20 amino acids commonly found in proteins and some of their properties.
  • be able to use basic separation and analysis methods in biochemistry and then interpret the results in a written report.
  • be able to account for the possible toxicity of the chemicals used in the laboratory course and the waste management of these.

Content

The structure and properties of amino acids and proteins. Enzymology. Catabolism and anabolism of carbohydrates and lipids including bioenergetic principles. Basic knowledge of the living environment and social sustainability from a societal perspective. The structure of nucleic acids and the processes of replication, transcription and translation.

Basic experimental methods, eg gel filtration, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and spectrophotometry. Risk assessment of a chemical used in the laboratory course.
