About the course
Aim
The course aims to give the students an understanding of how medicines act on different organs, tissues and cells as well as to give a practical understanding on drug administration routes and dosing for different animal species.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe the common mechanisms of action underlying drug activity.
- Describe common drugs for the treatment of different animal species with special focus on pain relief and drugs that affect the nervous system.
- Describe type diseases in different animal groups and how these can be treated and/or prevented.
- Report different administration methods for drugs and calculation of dosage.
- Independently collect information to gain in-depth knowledge in area of animal pharmacology and convey this knowledge to classmates orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate a professional approach to the treatment of animals with approved drugs.
Content
The course aims to provide basic knowledge about the use of drugs for therapeutical use on animals by focusing on treatments suitable for different animal groups. The course covers basic concepts in pharmacology and the description of the mechanisms of action of different drugs for the treatment of different types of diseases.
The course covers pets (especially dogs and cats), horses, experimental animals as well as food-producing species such as cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens. Differences and similarities with regard to treatment and tolerance of different drugs are addressed.
