About the course
Aim
The course is focused on the toxicological effects of potentially harmful substances on humans and other organisms with emphasis on the molecular processes affected by the toxicants.
Having successfully completed this course, the student is expected to:
- explain the mechanism of action of toxic chemicals, their transport and accumulation in the environment and in organisms;
- be able to perform a toxicity test of a chemical, including interpretation and presentation of the data obtained;
- reflect on the use of chemicals for a sustainable development of our society.
Content
Through the presentation and discussion of fundamental toxicological concepts the course will assist the students in deepening the understanding of the acute and long-term environmental effects of harmful substances to living organisms. The following concepts will be discussed in the course:
- Fate and Transport of Contaminants in the environment;
- Uptake and Modes of Action of toxicants in biological systems;
- Endocrine disruptors and human pharmaceuticals;
- Biotransformation, Detoxification, and Biodegradation;
- Toxicity and assessment of chemical mixtures;
- Toxicity Testing Methods and analysis of exposure-response curves;
- Ecological Risk Assessment.
One of the laboratory practicals in the course is part of the track Qualitative Laboratory Work with Reflection (Kvalitativt Laborativt Arbete med Reflektion, KLA-R). This track is part of the courses with molecular biology labs in the program. On the KLA-R lab you will work independently in the lab, receive feedback on your practical work and be given the opportunity to reflect on your development as a laboratory practitioner.
