About the course
Aim
When the course is completed the student should be able:
- To identify and explain anatomy and physiological function of organs and organ systems
- To solve a physiological problem and to be able to identify and describe a physiological principle that is relevant to the physiological problem
- To explain and identify physiological function using conclusions drawn from experiments
Content
Physiological function at an organ and organ system level: Nervous system, sensory organs, endocrine system, muscles, circulation and blood, respiration, kidney functions
Assignment:Problem solving in physiology as a small group. Each student identifies a physiological principle (listed below) important to the problem solved.Physiological principles:
- Negative feedback regulation
- Positive feedback regulation
- Diffusion
- Molecular flows and gradients
- Cell to cell communication
- Transport of electrical charges
- Affinity between protein and ligand
- Mass balance
Practicals:
- Nervous system/Sensory physiology: Laboratory group work. Lab report.
Computer labs with applied practical experiments. Lab report.
