About the course
Aim
The course provides fundamental knowledge in biochemistry and cell structure and function. After completing the course the students should be able to:
- Be able to account for the structure function of proteins and apply this knowledge to understand the relationship between structure and function.
- Know the structure and function of the biomolecules that occur in the basic metabolism of carbohydrates, in the replication and in the central dogma of molecular biology.
- explain the structure and function of organelles and other structures of the eukaryotic cell
- perform basic laboratory work
Content
The structure of the nucleic acids and the central dogma in molecular biology. The structure of proteins using the concepts of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure, and the relation between protein structure and function. The main features of cell metabolism with respect to catabolism and anabolism. The basic structure and function of cells, including cell membranes, organelles and cellular communication, with a focus on the eukaryotic cell.
