About the course

Aim

After completing this course students should be able to analyze and solve problems and model calculations in several areas defined by discrete structures. The student should be able to

  • work with concepts and solve tasks within the areas described in the course content
  • perform calculations and report solutions to tasks within the course content using relevant concepts and clear reasoning

Content

  • Sets, set operations, Venn diagram, Cartesian product, power set, set equality
  • Combinatorics: the addition and multiplication principle, permutations, combinations, repetitions, the binomial and multinomial theorem, the pigeonhole principle, PIE
  • Relations and functions, equivalence relations, partial orders, Hasse diagram, topological sorting, lattice
  • The principle of induction, the strong principle of induction, recursion
  • Number theory: divisibility, prime numbers, fundamental theorem of arithmetic, Euclid's algorithm, Diophantine equations, modular arithmetic, congruence calculus, Chinese remainder theorem, Fermat's small theorem
  • Graph theory: graphs and simple graphs, Euler paths and cycles, Hamiltonian paths, bipartite graphs, trees, minimal spanning trees, polyhedra and planar graphs, graph colorings.
