History of Education

Aim

This course examines major themes, developments and dilemmas in educational history. The emergence of the educational system in Sweden is seen in relation to developments in other countries. After completion of the course the student should - Be able to describe the historical development of forms of education, based on central explanations for the emergence of systems of education - Discuss the emergence of Sweden’s system of education in relation to changes in society - Be aware of different research traditions about history of education.

Content

The importance of changes in society for the formation of education in an international perspective. The historical developments of different forms of education and the emergence of an educational system in Sweden. Research traditions in history of education. The dealt with include educational media, gender and ethnicity, public and higher education.
