About the course
Aim
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe and explain the role of urban and regional planning in public administration
- describe and relate governance theory to strategic urban and regional planning
- compare political processes and governance structures within Europe
- problematise and discuss the relationship between politics, administration and urban and regional planning based on relevant social science theories
Content
The course introduces the management and political organisation of urban and regional planning from a European perspective. The course deepens knowledge about how governance of urban and regional planning can be achieved through public administration. The course also highlights how laws, regulations and administrative practices can both enable and limit urban and regional planning. Furthermore, the course studies governance theories focusing on public administration and how it is characterized by political visions and traditions. Based on such theories, the course highlights the challenges that administrative institutions face when society changes. In addition, the management of urban and regional planning is referred to on several institutional levels: municipal, regional, national and European level.
