About the course
Aim
This course provides an in-depth understanding of the fundamental physics underpinning the use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic and therapeutic applications within healthcare. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Solve practical problems involving the application of ionizing radiation.
- Analyze scenarios to measure ionizing radiation using major types of radiation detectors.
- Apply basic concepts of radiation safety and protection in various settings.
- Explain the principles of magnetic resonance physics and solve introductory tasks.
- Discuss and illustrate systematic quality assurance processes within healthcare, focusing on radiological equipment.
Content
Different types of radiation, generation of ionizing radiation, interactions of ionizing radiation with matter, radiation detection and measurement instruments, fundamentals of radiation dosimetry, radiation quantities and units, basic concepts in radiobiology, principles of radiation protection, radiation in the environment, medical uses of ionizing radiation, the regulatory framework for using ionizing radiation, introduction to nuclear magnetic resonance physics for medical imaging, and quality assurance procedures for radiological equipment.
