About the course
Aim
After passing the course, the student is supposed to be able to
- use different ways to represent signals, e.g. in terms of continuous and discrete time, frequency and dimensionality, as well as perform related calculations.
- account for fundamental bounds for compression and transfer of information, as well as perform related calculations.
- account for relevant models of physical communication channels, as well as perform calculations related to these models.
- Solve a practical problem related to the course contents and account for this solution.
Content
- Signals: Sampling in the time domain. Representation of time- and band-limited signals, dimensionality of signals. Narrowband signals and I/Q representation. Sampled systems. Introduction to noise.
- Information: Fundamental limits for transmission and storage of information, entropy, capacity. Introduction to techniques for compression and error protection. Simple examples of codes for these purposes.
- Communication: Examples of signals in electrical engineering applications, especially communications and navigation systems. Modeling of physical channels (cables, radio).
