About the course

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide the student with in-depth knowledge of global illumination algorithms. After this course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the raytracing concept for the illumination of scenes involving mirrors and transparent surfaces.
  • understand the idea of Monte-Carlo integration and how it is used to illuminate diffuse surfaces in Monte-Carlo raytracing.
  • explain what photon mapping is and how it can be used to resolve caustics.

Content

The course will include the following topic areas: optics and light, ray tracing algorithms, Monte Carlo sampling and integration, general strategy for solving the rendering equation, stochastic path tracing, photon mapping, caustics, perception and display.
