About the course
Aim
After completing the course the student should be able to:
- Analyse how different manufacturing technologies can affect the environmental sustainability performance of products and production systems.
- Analyse how different product design strategies can affect the environmental sustainability performance of products and production systems.
- Apply product design strategies such as Design for Manufacturing (DfM), Design for Assembly (DfA), and Design for Disassembly (DfD) with an aim to increase the environmental sustainability performance of products and discuss how to use the results in decision-making within product and production development.
Content
The course brings up different aspects on how manufacturing affects product design and the environment. For example, the choice of manufacturing technologies, assembly/disassembly, energy-efficient manufacturing, and reducing emissions from manufacturing. Moreover, the course brings up product requirements that derive from manufacturing through DfM and DfA and how environmental legislation affects the manufacturing process. The term remanufacturing is also brought up and which affects remanufacturing has on choice of manufacturing and product design alternatives.
