    About the course

    Aim

The aim of the course is to give course participants both theoretical and applied knowledge of thermodynamics and energy technology. After the course, the student should be able to:

    • Understand the meaning and consequence of states and properties of gases, vapors and liquids.
    • Understand the first law of thermodynamics and its application to stationary thermodynamic systems.
    • Calculate and analyze energy content, energy transformation and transfer of energy for thermodynamic systems, processes, and thermodynamic cycles.
    • Relate basic thermodynamic concepts and consequences to the transformation and use of energy and analyze energy engineering systems about performance and energy efficiency.

    Content

The course deals with applied thermodynamics, which is a central area for virtually all technical and engineering sciences and for long-term sustainable development. Energy technology and basic thermodynamics are introduced. Central course elements relate to the state and properties of gases, liquids and vapors; energy, heat and work; main laws of thermodynamics with a focus on the first law of thermodynamics (the principle of conservation of energy); systems, processes and circuit processes (Rankine, Otto and Diesel cycles and the compressor cycle).
