    About the course

    Aim

One main task in Solid Mechanics is to investigate the interaction between forces (the loading) and deformations in structures made of different materials. In the course, the dimensioning of constructions or parts of them will be studied so that the functioning of the structure is achieved with a sufficient safety. The course thereby becomes a fundamental technical subject of vital importance for the technical application subjects. After completed course the student shall:

    • be familiar with nomenclature and central concepts within solid mechanics,
    • be able to use the subject's tools to carry out simpler strength analysis,
    • be able to carry out simpler dimensioning.

    Content

Definitions and fundamental concepts, uniaxial states, elementary elasticity theory, elastic-viscoplastic material, thermoelastic materials, truss analysis, torsion of axes, buoyant load increase, section sizes and equilibrium for beams, deformation and stress in bending, equation of the elastic line, elementary case, Euler buckling, multiaxial stress – strain states, Hooke's generalized law, the steam boiler formulas, Mohr's circle, stress concentrations, yield criteria.
