About the course
Aim
After completing the course, the student will be able to
- Describe different types of additive manufacturing and their working principles, as well as associated post processes.
- Demonstrate basic design skills for additive manufacturing, including opportunities and restrictions with the technology and how different design and optimization software can be used.
- Analyse design, process and material choices related to the design requirements, environmental impact, and cost of a product, with reference to other conventional manufacturing processes.
Content
Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, has aroused great interest thanks to the ability to create and manufacture complex and customized geometries. The consequences of additive manufacturing span over the entire product life cycle and force us to re-evaluate how products are designed, produced and delivered to customers around the world. New industrial AM processes can be used with polymers, metals, composites and other advanced materials and have already found applications in a number of different industries, which contribute to e.g. more efficient transport and energy systems, cheaper and faster development of production tools and individualized medical applications.
- Methods for additive manufacturing in metals, polymers and composites.
- Advantages and disadvantages of additive manufacturing compared to conventional manufacturing techniques.
- Design and process preparation for additive manufacturing.
- Opportunities with topology optimization and additive manufacturing
- Basic knowledge of suitable methods for inspection and post-processing of an additively manufactured product to ensure the desired functionality.
- Health, environmental and sustainability aspects linked to additive manufacturing
