    About the course

    Aim

The overall goal is that the student , with the Maxwell equations as tha starting point, should be able to define, derive and use basic time independent and time dependent electromagnetic laws and theorems on problems. This implies that the student should be able to:

    • use fundamental electromagnetic laws and theorems
    • formulate idealized electromagnetic models
    • solve electromagnetic problems with both static and time dependent fieldsprimarily in physics and electrical engineering
    • be able to explain in a well structured and logical concise way solutions and derivations.

    Content

The course is based on Maxwell’s equations as the classical basic postulates of electromagnetism. These are formulated and used in both differential and integral form in derivations and problem solving. Subareas in the course are:

    • Electrostatics: Electrostatic Energy and Forces.
    • Steady Electric Currents: Magnetostatic Energy and Forces, Motion of Charged Particles in Electromagnetic Fields. Magnetic Circuits
    • Time-Varying Electromagnetic Fields: Induction, Faraday’s law, Inductance, Electromotive Force, Displacement Current Density, Skin Effect, Electromagnetic Waves, Poynting Vector.
    • Snell’s laws of reflection and refraction, and Fresnel’s formulas are derived from electromagnetics. Certain applications of electromagnetics on waveguides.
