About the course
Aim
The purpose of the course is to provide a theoretical and practical basis to understand, construct and analyse diskrete systems. After completing the course a student should be able to
- translate a problem description to a theoretical model
- apply and present basic concepts from discrete mathematics
- apply structured methods for analysis and synthesis of combinatorial cicuits and sequential circuits
- prove mathematical statements about discrete systems
- construct working hardware from a design
- verify the hardware against the original problem description
- use mathematical concepts in combination with computer programs to solve problems.
Content
- Number systems and coding: representations, conversions
- Prepositional logics and Boolean algebra
- Proof methods: rules of inference, proof principles, mathematical induction
- Sets: set operations, cardinality, power sets
- Relations: properties of relations, composition, closure, ordering
- Functions: injectivity, surjectivity, bijectivity, composition
- Combinatorial circuits: miminisation, Karnaugh diagrams, NAND and NOR synthesis, tri-state, incompletely specified circuits, curcuits with multiple outputs
- Combinatorial components: adder, comparator, decoder, demultiplexer, multiplexer, non-volatile memory
- Sequential circuits: synchrony-asynchrony, Mealy-Moore models, state, state machine, state minimisation
- Synthesis with clocked flip-flops and counters, asynchronous signals to synchronous systems, initialisation
