About the course
Aim
The course should provide a possibility for the student to acquire knowledge about the physical properties of light and its impact and interaction with biological tissue. After passing the course the student should be able to
- Describe and apply fundamental processes of light interaction with biological tissue.
- Describe, utilize and assess the validity of analytical and statistical light-tissue interaction models across different tissues and medical use cases.
- Describe, differentiate and assess suitable light-tissue interaction methods, coherent and incoherent light source applications and technologies for specific medical applications and clinical needs.
Content
- Optical properties of biological tissue.
- Measurement of tissue optical properties.
- Light transport in tissue.
- The therapuetic window.
- Light transport modelling and simulation.
- Optical techniques in biomedical applications, such as: diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustic imaging, laser speckle imaging, etc.
